Amelia Earhart’s Lockheed Electra 10E
In 2019 a deep sea exploration lead by Dr. Robert Ballard sailed around the Pacific Island Nikumaroro - an island that is approximately 7.5km long and 2.5km wide and is suspected as a possible location where Amelia Earhart could have crashed her plane in July 1937. She took off from New Guinea in an attempt to circumnavigate the globe and was due to land in Howland Island in the Pacific Ocean but never arrived. There have been many theories put forward on her disappearance but the mystery still remains and Dr. Ballard searched this area in the hope of solving the mystery. Unfortunately he ended his search and it was inconclusive but his team are hopeful and may possibly return to the area to explore other theories about Earhart’s disappearance. Dr. Ballards mission was filmed by National Geographic who released a documentary about Earhart.
Robert D Ballard is a well known ocean explorer who has made many famous ocean discoveries i.e. the Titanic, the German battleship Bismarck, John F. Kennedy’s World War II patrol boat. In 2004 he was appointed Professor of Oceanography and is a Director of the Institute for Archaeological Oceanography at the University of Rhode Island’s Graduate School of Oceanography. He took charge of the famous flag-ship research vessel the Exploration Vehicle Nautilus, in 2008.
The exploration vessel Nautilus is owned and operated by the Ocean Exploration Trust founded by Doctor Ballard. It was built in 1967 in Germany, is 64 feet in length and can travel up to speeds of 10 knots (19k per hour). It has a permanent crew of seventeen which includes scientists and engineers from all over the world. Nautilus is equipped with very sophisticated scientific equipment and mapping technology to explore the planets oceans and also offers live streaming for scientists, students and the public to dive in and experience life beneath the ocean. E/V Nautilus uses sonar to map the floors of the ocean and once completed, deploys a wide range of remotely operated vehicles that collects video footage and samples for analysis. Samples collected can be processed in the ships on-board laboratories.
An exploration team used an underwater drone to scan an area of ocean in 2023 and they believe they have discovered Amelia Earhart's plane. We are awaiting further exploration and confirmation.
