On this day Thursday June 10th 2021 an astronomical event took place across the world and was visible in Ireland around 10am - it was a partial solar eclipse, also known as an annular eclipse.
A partial eclipse doesn’t block the sun’s light completely as a total eclipse would and it wouldn’t get as dark as it would during a total eclipse. Partial eclipses take place approx twice a year around the world. During an eclipse season at least two eclipses i.e. a solar and a lunar take place. They are much more likely to occur near the poles. 2020 was a particularly notable year for sky gazers and enthusiasts as a total of six eclipses took place, four lunar and two solar!
On the morning of June 10th 2021 the clouds that we have grown used to seeing in Ireland, covered the sky like a blanket but they parted just in time to allow a view of this spectacular occurrence. Star gazers and enthusiasts were overjoyed to capture some stunning photos of the event as the moon slowly moved directly between the Sun and the Earth creating a partial solar eclipse.
David Moore from Astronomy Ireland said, the eclipse is the deepest partial eclipse of the sun since March 20th, 2015 and that there will not be a comparable partial eclipse until March 29th, 2025. Ireland’s last total solar eclipse was in 1724 and there will not be another one until September 23rd, 2090!
The sun’s temperature varies as it is made up of three layers. It is estimated that the average surface temperature of the sun is approximately 5,500°C. Gravitational attraction in the Sun’s core creates huge temperatures and pressure and some estimates are around 15 million degrees Celsius!
Whilst Techris Systems provide a wide range of high quality, accurate, measuring instruments (not to measure the Sun’s temperature!) our range of thermometers and data loggers can be used to record surface and internal temperatures from as
low as -50 to over 1000°C.
