In Ireland we can experience all four seasons in the same day. Weather changes regularly and sometimes it can be difficult to provide an accurate weather forecast. It is so often a favourite topic for the Irish, for that very reason. We all depend on a good weather forecast to help us with our daily routines and to assist certain professions e.g. for farmers, fishermen, food industry. But long before technology existed to assist meteorologists in their daily forecasts, Irish people simply depended on their own predictions which were handed down from generation to generation. Predicting the weather and fluctuating temperatures from the signs of nature, animals and birds and converting them into rhymes became popular.
Here are a sample of some of the weird and wonderful predictions our forefathers would have used and some are still in existence today!
A rainbow in the morning is the Shepherd's warning.
A rainbow in the night is the Shepherd's delight.
If March comes in like a lion it goes out like a lamb.
A wet and windy May fills the barn with corn and hay
When the cuckoo calls from a leafless thorn sell your cow and buy corn.
A mackerel sky is never dry.
March winds and April showers bring forth May flowers.
If a thrush is looking for food, then we're sure to have a soak,
If the oak should bud before the ash, then we'll only have a splash.
This was often the only way Irish people had to predict temperatures (hot or cold) during the seasons. Predicting soaring summer temperatures, whilst good news for those that work inside, offered no comfort to farmers and fishermen and the food sector in general. Heat Waves and droughts during the summer when temperatures rise or storms and freezing temperatures during the Winter, pose major challenges for farmers and agribusiness and those in the food sector. Keeping track of storage and/or cultivation temperatures for the food industry is vital to minimise bacterial growth and ensure fresh produce - thankfully we now have much more precise and reliable ways to ensure that optimum conditions are maintained.
