PH meters are used to measure hydrogen-ion activity i.e. acidity or alkalinity in a solution. pH Meters can be referred to as moisture meters, water meters but pH meters have a wide range of uses. They are used in agriculture for soil measurements, testing water quality and water supply, waste water, swimming pools, beer brewing or wine making and in laboratories, healthcare or environmental applications. A pH meter is used to determine the acidity or alkalinity of a solution.
Typically the pH electrode will be stored in solution when not in use and should be returned to this storage solution as soon as possible after use and when cleaned. pH meters usually require frequent user calibration. This is achieved by referencing your pH meter against prepared buffer solution of a defined pH value e.g. 4 or 10pH. The electrode/ probe of the pH Meter should remain in the buffer solution for at least 30 seconds or until the reading is stable and shake off any excess solution. Once a stable reading with reference to the buffer solution is achieved, your meter is ready for use and insertion into the liquid or semi solid that you wish to measure. There are many types of pH electrodes which are used for different applications and substances but in general your meter and electrode should be used with care as they can be fragile.
The pH range of a pH meter goes from 0 to 14 with a pH reading of around 7 being neutral. pH readings of less than 7 indicate acidity and above 7 alkalinity e.g. lemon juice or vinegar have a pH of around 2. Whereas bleaches and oven cleaners for example would have a pH of around 13.
After using a pH meter it is advisable to clean the pH meter but not with any detergent based solution. Simply rinse the pH meter in warm water and/or use a pH neutral wet wipe. Depending on your application and environment and to avoid contamination, cleaning of the body of the pH meter may also be required i.e. buttons, screen etc. and this can be carried out using alcohol cleaning wipes.
