The Adélie penguins are found in the Antarctic near Ross Sea where they live all year round and are rarely spotted elsewhere but one young bird turned up on a beach in New Zealand approximately 3000 kilometres away from its home!
A local resident discovered the little penguin whilst walking along the beach near Birdlings Flat just off the coast of South Island. Locals nicknamed him Pingu and contacted Thomas Stracke from Christchurch Penguin Rehabilitation who helped to rescue Pingu . Pingu was very dehydrated and exhausted, he looked confused and hardly moved. He was given fluids and food to help revive him.
It is unusual that these penguins would turn up in New Zealand due to the size of the island but this is the third occasion where an Adélie penguin has been found on New Zealand’s coast. The Department of Conservation have taken note of these sightings. Climate change and rising temperatures are making it more difficult for penguins to find food. Pingu was released back into the bay at the Banks Peninsula and everyone is hoping he makes it back home safely.
