A rare Egyptian vulture has been seen flying around the Roscommon area. Owen Murphy, a warden for the National Parks and Wildlife Services noticed some unusual flight patterns and decided to investigate the bird further. Mr Murphy was surprised when he discovered that it was an Egyptian vulture, the same type that was also spotted in the summer of 2021 in Co. Down and Donegal (although it is not known if this was the same bird).
This rare sighting has generated a lot of interest, as it is unusual to see such a magnificent bird in Ireland and lots of people are travelling to the area to view it. Lough Ree and the shores of the River Shannon are an important breeding ground for waterbirds and wildlife. The National Parks and Wildlife Service have stressed that the vulture is not a threat to any wildlife in the area or a danger to the public.
This magnificent and intelligent bird has been praised for its striking appearance and yellow face. Ancient Egyptians worshipped the vulture that was sacred to the goddess Isis and a symbol of royalty in Egyptian culture. Egyptian vultures were a common sight in Delhi in the past but in 2007 the Egyptian vulture was categorised as endangered due to its decline.
The Egyptian vulture is known to travel long distances, it is Europe’s only long-distance migratory vulture and is usually seen in the Iberian Peninsula, Africa and India. A dangerous and lengthy journey for these striking birds, they can cover distances of up to 5000km during migration!
