The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and Nasa scientists released a report this year that showed 2021 was the sixth hottest year on record. Scientists point to climate change as the reason and higher levels of carbon dioxide and greenhouse gases in the atmosphere which has led to the last eight years being the hottest on record.
2021 saw wildfires, floods, drought and extreme temperatures. It was one of the hottest ever summers right across Europe. Canada and the US experienced similar heatwaves while other countries like China experienced both heatwaves and floods. Germany and California suffered major flooding and Africa was plagued with locusts.
Global warming and rising temperatures have resulted in melting ice in the Arctic, causing rising sea levels which in turn causes permafrost to melt and release carbon. Temperatures of up to 54 deg C were recorded in California and almost 49 deg C in Sicily! La Niña also arrived in 2021, resulting in cooling of the pacific waters. La Niña (Little Girl in Spanish) cooled the pacific waters and affected weather cycles all over the world. When this occurs, temperatures during winter rise in the South and cool in the North.
Rising global temperatures has had a devastating impact on our ecosystems and communities. Tropical storms, cyclones, flooding and high temperatures all contributing to a higher number of fatalities around the world.
Since 2005 most of the hottest years on record have occurred. Scientists expect that these weather patterns will continue as long as global warming continues to cause rising temperatures.
