What is it about women's clothing that designers have overlooked the importance of pockets for the modern woman. Any pockets that do exist are so small that they are barely of any benefit or are just a fake fashion design or worse - stitched shut with no practical use or benefit. The pursuit of skirts, trousers or jeans with usable pockets can be struggle but the need for pockets has much more history than simply, women want pockets in their clothing. It is of far greater significance (both politically and historically) that women have fought to secure!
During the 1800’s when women’s fashion changed to more figure hugging dresses, pockets simply disappeared as women’s roles and place was very much in the home, cooking and cleaning, whilst men were considered the stronger sex and held all the money, requiring pockets of course! Women on the other hand were considered weaker and therefore by default unequal and so began the inequality of men and women’s right to pockets.
Then in 1900s along came the Suffragettes and with this movement came the ‘Suffragette Suit’ with up to six pockets and encourage looser, more comfortable clothing for women, created in 1910 by the American Ladies Tailors Association - finally some practical clothing for women. Also with the arrival of World War I and II, as women were relied upon for much work and duties that their male colleagues and husbands would have completed, women wore much more practical clothing like trousers and required pockets and so at last women’s needs were met - or was it?
When men returned from war - the design of women’s clothing changed again - back to the more figure hugging versions and women had to ditch the male style of clothing and become more feminine again - hence the disappearance of pockets. Then along came the handbag and so it was bye bye to pockets for women.
Pockets are overlooked when it comes to women’s clothing designs and any pockets that do exist in women’s clothing are of little or no use. Women’s pockets are generally smaller and narrower than men’s which makes them almost unusable - not big enough for a mobile phone or a purse.
It’s a very simple problem to solve and let’s hope that designers around the world will change their view and design on pockets for women.
